The Intermediate Pistol Skills Course is for those who have completed the Introduction to Handgun Shooting class, or who possess a base level of firearms handling experience. The course has a limited classroom portion as most of the time is spent on the firing line. You will shoot a minimum of 100 or up to 250 rounds in drills ranging from 5-25 yards. You will shoot to the NRA qualification standards at all distances. The course is highly focused on introducing many new skills in a short time frame and can be intense but always fun.
Topics Covered:
- Holsters, drawing and reholstering safely.
- Clearing malfunctions (failure to feed/eject, stove pipes, double feeds, squib loads etc.).
- Reloading types (Speed, Tactical, Retention, Emergency) and magazine manipulation.
- Sight picture, holdovers, transitioning targets, and accuracy techniques.
- Precision shooting, rapid fire, proficiency drills.
- Dry Fire and other home drills for self improvement of skills learned.
At the end of the course, you will see a measurable improvement in your skills that builds the confidence needed to continue your future firearms training. You will also be instructed in dry fire drills, in-home pistol manipulation exercises, and other materials that will allow you to continue developing your skills on your own time.
Shooting skills are perishable so your “homework” never ends. We are highly interested in your success and enjoyment with shooting handguns and are always available by phone or email after the class to discuss training issues or answer questions.
We provide targets and bottled water.
What to bring:
- A fully functional pistol, either a revolver or semi-auto and 2-3 magazines. If you do not have a pistol, you can rent one of ours for $35-$50 depending on your selection. Please call or email to make arrangements prior to the class date.
- Holster (IWB or OWB) and sturdy belt.
- Magazine pouch/holder and mag loader
- Ammo: A minimum* of 100 rounds of brass case FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ammunition in the caliber of your pistol. No steel cased or hand loaded ammo allowed. *Each shooting drill has a minimum and maximum round count. If you want to bring more than the minimum, you will be able to shoot up to the maximum per drill (max total for course 250 rounds). We can sell ammo in .38 special or 9mm. You must make arrangements at least 1 week in advance of the class if you need to buy ammo from us.
- Eye and ear protection.
- Any beverages you want in bottles or spill proof containers.. Snacks are also encouraged and work well as bribes for the instructor.
- A notebook and pen. Smart devices are allowed in the classroom but not at all on the firing line at the shooting range.
- You will need to wear close-toed shoes and avoid low-cut shirts as hot shell casings can fall into open shirt fronts.
Suggestions: Consider bringing a backup pistol. Murphy’s Law is in effect at every shooting range. You don’t want a malfunction to stop your training so have an extra just in case. Make sure your range bag has extra magazines, parts, appropriate tools, oil, cleaner, batteries, bore snake etc. Magazine loaders save time on the firing line so please bring yours. Humor and Humility ensure that shooters are Happy so come with plenty of both.
