Llano is the deer hunting capital of Texas. After you shoot the big buck on your exotics hunt get some pistol or firearms training for you and the hunters in your party.

Everyone comes to Llano for the opportunity to hunt whitetail deer and shoot firearms. Learning how to safely use a pistol for self-defense should be a priority for you as well. At Texas LTC Gun Safety Central we prepare hunters and anyone else for the realities of carrying a handgun on your person. If you have recently purchased a new gun with a red dot sight this article may be of interest to you.

Reasons to get a Red Dot Sight (RDS) on your Pistol and what to expect.

During a conversation about Red Dot Sights (RDS) someone brought up the comparison between the “current RDS phase” and the sudden popularity of lasers on handguns not too many years back. A popularity that has all but gone away with the introduction of high quality, lower priced Red Dot Sights. Having shot both laser and RDS I can say that there is a similar issue with learning to use a laser and a RDS. It has to do with what many have termed chasing the dot. This is when the shooter presents their pistol and instead of being focused on the target they are just searching for the dot (laser or RDS) somewhere out in front of them. Hoping for it to appear near or over the target. Often, they will waive the muzzle around a bit to possibly catch a glimpse of the dot’s movement so they can then direct the dot onto the target. This leads to sub-optimal accuracy performance (i.e. you miss!).

The Advantages of RDS on Pistols

While there may be other similarities, RDS is here to stay and that is probably a good thing for handgun shooters in general. The advantages or RDS on a pistol are many. They help with both speed and accuracy. They help shooters attain faster target acquisition and get faster, more accurate follow up shots. For those who have a hard time seeing the iron sights, especially on compact pistols, an RDS is an actual game changer. It’s hard to beat looking at your target and seeing a bright red dot right where you want the bullet to go.

Texas LTC Gun Safety Central offers both beginner and advanced RDS classes. Here is an excerpt from our RDS Introduction class, “If you are thinking of getting a RDS for your pistol or already have one, this course will get you started with everything you need to be knowledgeable and proficient in Red Dots for pistols.
