Making the decision to publicly carry a handgun on your person comes with a lot of responsibilities. You must know the law regarding where you are allowed to carry a handgun (it differs for LTC holders) and when you can use it in a self-defense situation. You need to know how to draw your pistol from concealment without catching garments, how to move and shoot and how to shoot in extreme situations (holding a package or child). Are there alternatives to lethal force and what are the repercussions of a self-defense shooting? These are several of the considerations involved in carrying a handgun in public as well as personal defense at home or in the car. This class explores the legal and ethical implications, mindset and tactical strategies that surround using pistols in self-defense.

Selecting the correct pistol/ammo for self-defense/training
Carry modes and concealment techniques

- Holster (IWB or OWB) and sturdy belt.
- Magazine pouch/holder and mag loader
- Ammo: A minimum* of 100 rounds of brass case FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) ammunition in the caliber of your pistol. No steel cased or hand loaded ammo allowed. *Each shooting drill has a minimum and maximum round count. If you want to bring more than the minimum, you will be able to shoot up to the maximum per drill (max total for course 250 rounds). We can sell ammo in .38 special or 9mm. You must make arrangements at least 1 week in advance of the class if you need to buy ammo from us.
- Eye and ear protection.
- Any beverages you want in bottles or spill proof containers.. Snacks are also encouraged and work well as bribes for the instructor.
- A notebook and pen. Smart devices are allowed in the classroom but not at all on the firing line at the shooting range.
- You will need to wear close-toed shoes and avoid low-cut shirts as hot shell casings can fall into open shirt fronts.
Suggestions: Consider bringing a backup pistol. Murphy’s Law is in effect at every shooting range. You don’t want a malfunction to stop your training so have an extra just in case. Make sure your range bag has extra magazines, parts, appropriate tools, oil, cleaner, batteries, bore snake etc. Magazine loaders save time on the firing line so please bring yours. Humor and Humility ensure that shooters are Happy so come with plenty of both.
